Goodbye, #304

June 30, 2008 · 2 Comments

Well, Stage 1 of the Great Move is completed.  On Saturday we moved out of our apartment and into my parent’s house.  We lived on the third floor, so it was a rather daunting task to move everything downstairs and in a truck.  Thank GOD we have such wonderful friends and family that helped!  We had 11 people moving our stuff, and they pretty much emptied our apartment in about 30 minutes!  Everything went so much more smoothly and quickly than what I was expecting, I was very pleasantly shocked!  I spent the rest of the day painting and cleaning, and then a good bit of yesterday cleaning.  I think I killed a lot of brain cells yesterday afternoon from all the fumes from the cleaning products.  (I know, I know, pregnant women aren’t supposed to do that, but there just really wasn’t much choice in the matter, it had to be done.)

Last night Clay and I went back to wrap-up the loose ends, do a final vacuum, and say good-bye.  On one of our last trips down the stairs to our car, Clay was carrying a HUUUGE garbage bag full of trash, and it broke all over the ground in front of someone’s apartment.  It was already almost 10 p.m. and we were exhausted and so ready to be done.  I think we sat there and stared at it for about ten minutes trying to figure-out how to clean it up since it was our last trash bag and the dumpster was quite a walk away.  Jars of marshmallow creme and jelly and tobasco sauce were spilled everywhere all over the ground.  It was horrible.  We ended-up borrowing a few bags from neighbors, scooping all of our nasty trash into the smaller bags, and walking them to the dumpster.  It was disgusting, but it got the job done.  What a way to go out with a bang.

Then we had to go say good-bye to our home of four years, the only home we’ve ever known as a couple.  This apartment is where we spent our wedding night, where we brought Evelyne home, and where we got used to life as parents.   Each room holds almost every memory we’ve made as a married couple.  It’s a visual reminder to me of how far we’ve come, how much has changed in four years.  The room that used to be our junk room was painted purple and transformed into a baby room.  Our dining area (that we never really used anyway) was turned into Evelyne’s play area.  A living room once neat and simple was filled with bouncy seats and baby swings, and then cluttered with toys and baby dolls.  Especially since I’m a stay-at-home mom, my life is mostly spent in those rooms.

Apartment life is usually so temporary, so for the four most significant years of my life to be spent in this one apartment and then quickly left feels really odd.  I imagine someone new will move-in pretty soon.  Hopefully they’ll replace the nasty carpet with all the stains from Ev’s spit-up when she was a baby.  I’m sure they’ll repaint the walls that are marked from our picture frames and Evelyne’s high chair.  It’s weird to think that the new owners can never know the blessings and the life that took place in that home before them.

So for this month, we’re living with my parents.  Clay takes his physical therapy boards on Wednesday.  After that, he’s free until we move at the end of the month.  Literally the only responsibility either one of us will have is to take care of Evelyne, so it should be a fun next few weeks.  (at least I can sleep-in!)  Stage 1 of the Great Move is complete.  Stage 2 happens in a month.  Time is marching on.

Tagged—-I’m it!

June 25, 2008 · 1 Comment

Thanks to MongooseMom, I’ve been tagged to do one of these question/answer things.

1. WHAT DID YOU DO 10 YEARS AGO?

Gosh, ten years ago.  It was 1998 and I had just graduated high school.  I spent my summer going on trips and flirting with boys and pretty much being a carefree adolescent (I was only 17!).  Weird to think about now, I was probably the picture of immaturity!!!

2. FIVE ITEMS ON YOUR TO-DO LIST TODAY:

Hmm, I don’t so much have “to-do lists.”  I plan-on making a dinner and taking it to my sister-in-law who just had a baby, take a good nap, play with Evelyne, read my book, and try to go to bed earlier than I have been!

3. SNACKS I ENJOY:

Anything chocolate, potato chips, Chex Mix, popcorn, fruit, yogurt…. pretty much anything.

4. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WERE A BILLIONAIRE?

Wow.  I don’t know.  I would travel a lot, live relatively comfortably, and try to establish some kind of non-profit that would serve a great need in the world.  Which need, I have no idea.  There are too many, I would have to take a lot of time to think about that.  Possibilities: AIDS, poverty, children without families, refugees, etc….

I tag…….. Courtney and Elizabeth!

If you have been tagged recently and you don’t wish to join in on the fun, please don’t feel obligated! Here Are the Rules: Answer the following questions about yourself. At the end of the post you pass on the questions to some other bloggers and list their names. Then write them a comment telling them that they’ve been tagged and ask them to read your blog. Let the person who tagged you know that you’ve accepted the challenge and refer to your post.

Crib Recall

June 25, 2008 · 5 Comments

Just wanted to let everyone out there know that there’s been a big crib recall by Jardine, a company that makes many cribs sold at Babies ‘R Us and other stores. Apparently the slats can break and cause entrapment.  Evelyne’s crib was one of the ones that was recalled.  I found the model number and date of manufacture underneath one of the sides, saw that it was one of the ones recalled, and sent-in an information form.  I’m not sure what will happen from here on out, but I encourage everyone to check and see if your crib is one of these that are recalled since there’s such a variety of styles that this includes.

So busy with such important things

June 24, 2008 · 9 Comments

Well, Internet, I have not been quite as diligent lately about writing to you because I find myself in quite a state of preoccupation. We are moving-out of our apartment in five days, so we’re finally trying to start some packing.  So far it’s going well, I’m afraid to say it, but quite better than I expected.  Although I must remind myself that it’s the unpacking part that I absolutely detest, packing never so much bothered me.  Now let’s wait and see how much time it takes for me to get annoyed at living among boxes enough to motivate me to unpack when we get to Seattle!  Evelyne loves playing in the boxes and I’ve already found her standing on top of my small stack in the corner saying, “ah! ah!” which means “off! off!” I just came around the corner and there she was, about four feet in the air!

I was also quite busy tonight LOVING THE BACHELORETTE!  Am I the only one who is way into this?  I’ve always loved the Bachelorettes more than the Bachelors, I can’t believe they so rarely do them and it took this long to get another one.  I think there’s something about having a woman in charge and setting the tone that makes it so much more authentic and honest.  Not to mention there’s no annoying cat fights between slutty ambitious girls.  I think DeAnna was totally right to send Graham home tonight.  Honestly, I don’t know what she saw in him.  I LOVE Jesse and LOVE Jason, and I like Jeremy a lot.  Clay and I think she would have a pretty boring life with Jeremy (and I swear, if she doesn’t stop using the word “perfect” to describe him they’re going to have some major relationship issues later on when reality hits!!!), a fun life with Jesse, and a sweet family life with Jason.  I have to say that Clay and I BOTH totally teared-up when Jason and his son reunited tonight, I about cried through the entire scene!  It was just so sweet!  Not to mention the fact that Jason is from Kirkland, WA which is THE town we’re moving to in a month, so if they end-up together, we could totally see them at Trader Joe’s.

I’m off to bed, goodnight, dear Internet.

I’m famous

Today I have a guest post over on my friend JR’s blog, lifeasmission

It’s a reflection on the John Howard Yoder quote,

“The people who bear crosses are working with the grain of the universe.”

Any tips on how to pack-up your life?

June 19, 2008 · 9 Comments

So, we’re moving out of our apartment in about a week.  Have I packed ONE thing?  Not so much.

Part of me is kinda overwhelmed with how to begin, and I think that I’ll just haphazardly throw things in boxes the day before and call it even.  I mean, how hard can it be, really?  Do we really even have to empty our drawers or can we just put them in the moving truck with all the clothes in them?  I dunno, we’ve never done this before.

We’re going to be moving out of our apartment, putting our stuff in storage, and then moving-in with my parents for a month.  (The most awesome part of that is the fact that we will not be living on the third-floor anymore!!!!)  Originally we were going to leave for Seattle in the second week of July, but we found an amazing house to rent in Seattle that won’t be available until August 1st, so we pushed back our move date by a couple of weeks.  Even though it’s just a few more weeks, I’m excited to spend more time here with friends and family.  (Not to mention it might be nice to live with built-in babysitters for a while!)

So, any tips on how to begin packing?  Where to begin?!  What supplies do I need besides newspaper, tape, and boxes?  Any ideas on how to avoid breaking everything?  I have a feeling we’re going to be up late doing this the night before…..

Public Service Announcement About Carseats

June 19, 2008 · 3 Comments

Just a quick word about strapping your child in a carseat:

I can’t TELL you how many times over the past few years I’ve noticed parents strapping their kids into carseats (usually infant seats) with straps that are WAY too loose!  If the straps are hanging off the kid’s shoulders, that’s really not going to help them at all if you get in a car accident.  However much slack is in the straps, that’s how far your child will be flung forward during an accident.

Make sure that the straps are very snug against your child’s torso.  You’re not going to hurt them, and who cares if it annoys them a little.  They shouldn’t cut into the shoulders, but you should not be able to pinch any slack in the strap.

The chest clip should be across their chest, not down on the belly.  Aim to have it across the nipple line.

These are our kids’ lives we’re talking about, people.  If the straps are too loose, your child can literally be flung out of their seat in an accident.  Take a little extra time to make sure that they’re tight enough and positioned correctly—every time.

Still here.

June 18, 2008 · 7 Comments

I’m still here, just haven’t been blogging much lately.  Monday morning we celebrated the birth of my beautiful niece, Andrea Macie, and since then everything has been crazy.  The baby has had to be in the NICU due to fluid in her lungs, and my sister-in-law also had to be transferred to the ICU today because of issues with her heartrate and blood pressure.  Unfortunately, mom and baby have been separated almost since birth, so it’s been a hard thing for my sister-in-law and everyone else.

We’ve been spending a lot of time at the hospital, and let’s just say once and for all that a hospital is NOT the most fun place for a toddler with a lot of energy!  Thankfully, Evelyne has her cousin to play with (the cousin whose picture she carries with her all day long, kissing and rocking it), but still, two toddlers with nothing to do and nowhere to do it isn’t the easiest thing.  Ev has made a lot of friends since she says “hey!!!” to every SINGLE person we pass when we walk down the hall of the hospital!  She’s been so funny and outgoing lately, it’s hilarious.

Tonight we took her out to dinner with a bunch of my extended family and she spent most of the time running around the table, dancing for the restaurant employees, and squealing at a high decibel out of sheer excitement to be alive.  It was cute.

On another funny note, I keep forgetting I’m pregnant.  I mean, I’m aware of it in that I limit my caffeine intake and my stomach feels weird and hungry a lot of the time.  But other than that, it’s been a GREAT first trimester, I haven’t been sick, and I keep forgetting I’m even pregnant.  Unfortunately, this means that there are lots of close friends and family that we forget to even tell that we’re pregnant because we keep forgetting ourselves!  I can’t tell you how many conversations we’ve had lately where I say, “You do know I’m pregnant, right?”  They say, “NO!  What?!  You’re pregnant?!”  And I’m all, “Oh, yeah, I guess we forgot to tell everyone!  Sorry! Don’t take it personally!”  The other day someone congratulated me, and I stood there looking at her for the longest time before she said, “You are pregnant, right?”  Then I was like, “Oh YEAH!  I didn’t know why you were congratulating me!”

I did get an ultrasound last weekend, and it was SO great to see my little kumquat squirming around. (Supposedly, at 10 weeks, the baby is the size of a kumquat, whatever that is.)  The first ultrasound I had was just a month ago and it was just a blob with a heartbeat.  Now it has arms and legs and fingers and other than a slightly alien-like head, it looks like a baby—in just four weeks!

Anyway, so that’s me right now.  Pray for my sister-in-law and my niece…  They’ll both be fine, it’s nothing desperately serious, it’s just a difficult situation that wasn’t expected and she’s dying to hold her little girl.
